Meenakari: the colours Jaipur refuses to give up

28 February 2025

Enamel arrived in Jaipur with the Mughal ateliers and never left. The pigments are mineral oxides fired at temperatures that would destroy a set stone, which is why meena is always laid before the diamonds arrive.

Red is the hardest colour to fire and the reason Jaipur meenakari is judged by it. A house that can hold true ruby red across a full haar has nothing left to prove.

The finest work is on the reverse, against the skin. It is a quiet argument about who jewellery is really for.
